Meeting of Consultative Council of National Preventive Mechanism

On December 27, 2016, the Pubic Defender of Georgia presented new members of the Consultative Council of the National Preventive Mechanism - Ana Natsvlishvili and Nino Gobronidze at the Council meeting.

Performance of the National Preventive Mechanism in 2016 and priorities for the coming year were summarized at the meeting. Other topics of discussion were: the results of the monitoring carried out in the temporary detention facilities and police divisions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs; active participation of the National Preventive Mechanism in the international events, including the delivery of a report at the 30th session of the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture; activities planned for 2017.

Members of the Consultative Council of the National Preventive Mechanism spoke about their activities, reports, advocacy strategies for recommendations and other important issues.

The Consultative Council of the National Preventive Mechanism was founded by the Public Defender's order on December 15, 2014, with the aim to increase efficiency of the National Preventive Mechanism in the prevention of torture and other ill-treatment.

The Council is composed of the Public Defender, Deputies of the Public Defender, Heads of Departments of the Public Defender's Office and invited experts from local and international organizations working in the field of criminal justice and prevention of torture, as well as the academic/educational field relating to the NPM mandate.
