Recommendation on Providing Housing

Public Defender of Georgia, in accordance with article 21 (b) of the Organic Law of Georgia on Public Defender has addressed the Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees of Georgia with a recommendation to provide alternative housing to internally displaced families residing at #8 Apartment Block in Vaziani Military Settlement, Gardabani Region in view of their material hardship.

Internally Displaced Person A. N. filled an application at the Office of Public Defender of Georgia in regards with providing her with housing.

According to the application, A. N. is a resident of #8 Apartment Block in Vaziani Military Settlement, Gardabani Region. In view the fact that the mentioned apartment block was already damaged, on March 11, 2013 the left wing of the building came down leaving internally displaced families without housing.

Representatives of the Public Defender’s Office visited Gardabani Region and met with residents of #8 Apartment Block in Vaziani Military Settlement. They found out that part of the aggrieved families is livening in tents and the rest have moved in with close relatives. In fact, 12 males are living in tents and one female individual lives in a nearby garage.

Among the aggrieved there is one person with disabilities – G. A. as well as families with multiple children and single mothers. Some aggrieved persons also suffer from diabetes, shortness of breath and some that have been through a stroke.

According to the residents of #8 Apartment Block they have addressed the State Chancellery, Ministry of Finance of Georgia, Gamgeoba of Gardabani Municipality and also other non-governmental and local organizations with request for assistance.

#8 Apartment Block in Vaziani Military Settlement, Gardabani Region is damaged and therefore it is unsuitable for housing. Living in tents and garage endangers health and lives of IDPs. It is also noteworthy that there is a person with disabilities, as well as minor children and individuals suffering from serious illnesses among the aggrieved.
