Activities of Public Defender of Georgia Discussed at ENNHRI Meetings

On May 22-27, 2018, Meri Kochlamazashvili, Senior Advisor to the Public Defender of Georgia on the Human Rights of IDPs, took part in the meetings of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

The Senior Advisor briefed the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internallydisplaced persons and various representatives of national human rights institutions of the activities of the Public Defender of Georgia in the field of protection of the rights of internallydisplaced persons. She underlined the close cooperation with state agencies and NGOs.

It should be noted that the Georgian Public Defender’s Office was presented as an institution with one of the best practices in terms of studying and monitoring the IDPs' rights situation, while its activities were reflected in the draft action plan on strengthening the mandate of national human rights institutions in the direction of protection of the rights of internallydisplaced persons.

The representative of the Public Defender of Georgia also held meetings with representatives of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada and Commissioner for Human Rights, and spoke about the experience of the Public Defender's Office in the mentioned direction.

The meetings were also attended by the First Deputy Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees of Georgia, as well as representatives of Ukraine’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Social Affairs.
