Campaign on International Human Rights Day

On 10 December 2019, in connection with the International Human Rights Day, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria held an information campaign near the Rustaveli Metro Station together with representatives of the EU Delegation to Georgia, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Council of Europe Office in Georgia.

At the event, the theme of which for 2019 was "Youth for Human Rights", Public Defender Nino Lomjaria addressed the Tbilisi population. "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted at the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948 laid the foundations for many important international treaties, which established a high standard of human rights worldwide," Nino Lomjaria said and thanked international partners for supporting the Public Defender's Office to protect human rights in Georgia.

Prime Minister's Human Rights Adviser Lela Akiashvili, EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia Christian Urse and UNOHCHR Senior Human Rights Adviser for South Caucasus Vladimir Shkolnikov also delivered speeches.

Within the framework of the campaign, the Public Defender and representatives of the Public Defender’s Office talked to the population in Tbilisi and 9 cities of Georgia about human rights and freedoms to raise the level of civic education, explained the Public Defender’s role and functions, handed out leaflets about the activities of the Public Defender's Office and other commemorative gifts. Participants of the event also played a role-playing game “How to behave when communicating with the police”.* The Public Defender's Office also prepared a special brochure as a guide for citizen-police relations in connection with the International Human Rights Day.

The event was supported by the EU project “Combating All Forms of Discrimination in Georgia”.
