Meeting representatives of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture in Geneva

Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili met with representatives of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture. At the meeting held in Geneva working principles of the newly-established Advisory Council of the National Preventive Mechanism and new composition of experts of the Special Preventive Group were discussed.

Ucha Nanuashvili provided information for the members of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture on the situation exiting in closed institutions and stressed importance of special reports that are now already published several times a year and reflect results of monitoring of planned and ad hoc visits to closed institutions.

The representatives of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture gave positive assessment to a fact of request of the Public Defender’s Office regarding a legislative change that envisages taking photos and access to surveillance camera recordings.

The representatives of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture promised their full support to the National Preventive Mechanism and the Public Defender’s Office and voiced an initiative for the National Preventive Mechanism of Georgia to share its successful experience with other countries.
