Public Defender Monitors Hearing of Khorava Street Case

The Public Defender of Georgia once again expresses sorrow over the death of minors as a result of the conflict that took place on Khorava Street on December 1, 2017. As the Public Defender publicly declared on the very first day of her term of office, the Khorava Street case would be one of the priorities for the Public Defender's Office.

It is known to the public that Tbilisi City Court has started closed consideration of the case on the merits. Consequently, on February 7, 2018, due to the sensitivity of the case, taking into account the interests of underage defendants and victims, the Public Defender appealed to Tbilisi City Court with a request to be allowed to attend the trial.

At today’s session, Tbilisi City Court considered the Public Defender’s appeal and granted it. The Public Defender welcomes the decision of the Court and terms it as a positive step for the purpose of raising confidence in the judiciary.

The Public Defender and her Office will systematically follow and monitor the trial as a neutral body.
