Public Defender’s Meetings in Geneva

On February 21-23, 2018, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria participated in the events organized by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) and the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) in Geneva. She also attended the Annual Conference on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In her speech delivered at the joint meeting of the General Assembly of the Global Alliance and the European Network, the Public Defender spoke about the activities, directions and priorities of her office; she underlined the close cooperation between the Public Defender's Office and the Global and European Networks, and expressed readiness to further deepen the cooperation.

Within the framework of the events, the Public Defender held meetings with her colleagues from various institutions. An interesting meeting was held with Beate Rudolf, Chairperson of the Global Alliance of Human Rights Institutions, who thanked the Public Defender for cooperation and promised to support her.

Another meeting was held with Hulan Tsedev, Chief of the Europe and Central Asia Section at the UN Human Rights Office, where the Public Defender of Georgia spoke about the situation of human rights in the country. Ms. Tsedev thanked the Public Defender for providing objective information and asked her to continue similar cooperation in the future too.

The general situation of human rights was discussed at the meeting held with Vladlen Stefanov, Chief of National Institutions, Regional Mechanisms and Civil Society Section of OHCHR. The challenges in the conflict regions and the special role of the Public Defender in the process of protecting the rights of conflict-affected people were also emphasized.

At the meeting with Izabel Chan, representative of the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub, Nino Lomjaria spoke about the future plans of cooperation and discussed specific directions (UN Sustainable Development Goals, business and human rights, persons with disabilities) where closer cooperative is needed.

The meetings were also attended by First Deputy Public Defender Tamar Gvaramadze and the Head of the Department of International Relations, Project Management and Civic Education, Niko Tatulashvili.
