Public Defender's Office Becomes Full Member of European Network of Equality Bodies

On 7 November 2018, the membership of the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia was discussed at the Annual General Assembly of the European Network of Equality Bodies (Equinet) in Brussels. Members of the Network unanimously supported Georgia’s full membership.

In her speech, Georgia's Public Defender Nino Lomjaria stressed the importance of Georgia's involvement in the Network’s activities and noted that this would be another important step in bringing Georgia’s equality mechanism closer to the international standard. In addition, the Public Defender’s Office, given its experience, can significantly contribute to the Network’s strengthening and and cooperation.

It should be noted that until now, members of the Network had only been EU member or candidate countries. Georgia is the first among the Eastern Partnership countries, which was given a membership opportunity in accordance with the amendments made at the General Assembly in 2017.

The Public Defender of Georgia has been participating in the EQUINET activities as an observer since 2014.
