Public Defender Continues Meetings in Samtskhe-Javakheti

On 22 October 2019, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria met with IDPs resettled in Akhaltsikhe and viewed their living conditions. According to the IDPs, the main challenge is infrastructural problems, including the need for the rehabilitation of the approximately one-kilometer road to the settlement, which creates the problem of movement due to severe climatic conditions, while the lack of transport makes it difficult to take children to schools and kindergartens.

The IDPs also complained about the issue of resettlement, as they believe that the division of space is not fair and is delayed.

The Public Defender informed the State Attorney of the human rights situation in the municipality. At the meeting with Besik Amiranashvili, the Public Defender was promised that infrastructure problems would be solved from the next year and that particular attention would be paid to the education issues and the recommendation of the Public Defender regarding the rehabilitation of the Georgian-language kindergarten in Akhalkalaki.

The Public Defender delivered a public lecture at Samtskhe-Javakheti State University, informed the students of the ombudsman's mandate and listened to their views on the rights situation in the region.
