Deputy Public Defender Takes Part in International Conference on Legal Aid

The Parliament of Georgia and the Legal Aid Service are hosting an international conference on access to legal aid in the criminal justice system on 13-15 November 2018. The event is being held for the third time in the world and representatives of various countries are discussing the most important issues. Participants will be able to share their experiences regarding various important issues for 3 days.

The organization of such a high level meeting in Georgia is a good confirmation of the international recognition of Georgia’s Legal Aid Service. The institutional arrangement of the Service, its experience and successful cases should be praised. In addition, they provide basis for achieving more in the future. The Public Defender's Office is closely linked with the Legal Aid Service; we select 3 members of the board of the Legal Aid Service and any similar success is just welcomed by us.

On 14 November 2018, Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Burjanadze led the 10th Plenary Session of the Conference, where rapporteurs introduced their experience in relation to early access to legal aid in criminal proceedings. They also discussed challenges and progress achieved by various countries, which will be a good opportunity for developing similar mechanisms in Georgia in the future.

The results of the conference will be a good opportunity for carrying out the ongoing or planned reforms in Georgia. The Public Defender thanks donor organizations, the active involvement of which made it possible to hold the event.
