The Public Defender is studying the fact of violation of journalists’ rights03 05 2012News outlets have disseminated information that on May 2, 2012, a part of journalists and news outlets were not allowed to attend the event that was held in Lado Meskhishvili Theatre in connection with the Kutaisi Day.
On May 3 of the same year, news outlets disseminated information that in the Kutaisi Theatre of Opera and Ballet a journalist of the local P.S. newspaper, Irakli Vachiberidze, was not allowed to attend the meeting with the local self-government and activists of the National Movement. According to him, four persons in civilian clothes whom he did not know beat him and took away his equipment, which was later returned by a stranger.
The Public Defender of Georgia has started studying the aforementioned facts. In particular, on May 3, 2012, representatives of the Public Defender of Georgia met and took explanatory notes from a correspondent of the Pirveli news agency, Nodar Jojua; a journalist of the Dzveli Kalaki radio station and the Versia newspaper, Tornike Khurtsidze; a journalist of the P.S. newspaper, Irakli Vachiberidze; and a journalist of Mega-TV TV station, Aleko Gvetadze.
After the Public Defender has studied the explanatory notes and the materials about the case thoroughly, he will respond in an appropriate manner.
