The Public Defender about the incident that took place on May 14, 2012

16 05 2012

I would like to respond to the incident that took place on May 14, 2012, between the Deputy Administrator of the Isani-Samgori District and the Head of the Krtsanisi District Organization of Free Democrats.

From the information that was disseminated, I learned that on May 14, 2012, the Deputy Administrator of the Isani-Samgori District, Beso Gazdeliani, was in one of the neighborhoods damaged by the flood to carry out his office duties.

It is clear from the video footage disseminated by the media that the Deputy Administrator got into verbal argument with a representative of one of the opposition parties, which resulted in the latter’s physical assault and was then followed by a physical confrontation between the two sides.

Each public servant should always keep in mind that, unlike ordinary citizens, public servants have an obligation to endure criticism, which assumes even more importance when they carry out their office duties.

Public officials should refrain as much as possible from inappropriate behavior. It is all the more unacceptable for them to assault individual citizens physically or to provoke a conflict, which was the case in this particular instance.

I call upon the relevant organs to respond adequately to the violation of law committed by Beso Gazdeliani. On the other hand, I address all public officials to observe the professional standard and act in accordance with their status.
