Public Defender’s Representatives Meet with NGOs Working on the Rights of Conflict-Affected Persons

On May 28, 2021, Tamar Gvaramadze, First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, and Sophio Rusetski and Meri Kochlamazashvili, representatives of the Public Defender's Office, held an informational meeting with non-governmental organizations working on the rights of conflict-affected population. The purpose of the meeting was to share and evaluate information on the rights situation of women living in the occupied territories of Georgia, including health challenges faced by them.

Participants talked about access to health care for people living in the occupied territories, which has been particularly complicated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Problems relating to vaccination and access to on-site qualified basic medical services were highlighted. According to them, the shortage of medical staff, as well as insufficient, outdated medical equipment, including in maternity homes, remains a challenge.

The Public Defender’s representative spoke about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on women’s rights. According to her, access to bare necessities (medicines, baby food) has been a problem over the past year, making it difficult for victims of violence to receive services in Tbilisi-controlled areas, worsening women's economic situation and hampering full access to education.
