74th Session of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

On January 25, 2017, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child reviewed Georgia’s 4th periodic report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the 74th session in Geneva, which was attended by Ekaterine Skhiladze, Deputy Public Defender, and Maya Gedevanishvii, Head of the Public Defender's Center for Child's Rights.

Members of the Georgian delegation - representatives of the executive and legislative branches of government took part in the discussion of the report and delivered speeches. The Committee members showed interest in the issues relating to the protection and realization of child's rights, such as health and social protection, freedom of expression, participation in the decision-making process, protection from violence, discrimination, de-institutionalization process, etc.

Apart from the Government’s report, alternative reports were submitted to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child by the coalition of non-governmental organizations, representatives of Georgia’s Office of the United Nations Children's Fund and the Public Defender of Georgia.

Georgia joined the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1994, by which the country undertook the commitment to implement the principles and child's rights set out in this international document at the legislative and executive levels. Once in 5 years the Committee members submit reports on the activities carried out in the field of child’s rights. After the session, the Committee reviews the results of the dialogue with the Governments and issues recommendations (concluding observations), consideration of which essentially help cultivation of the principles of the Convention. The UN committee reviewed Georgia’s 3rd periodic report in 2008.
