Public Defender Addresses Sports Federations with General Proposal on Prevention od Discrimination against Women Involved in Sports

On March 15, 2023, the Public Defender of Georgia addressed the Presidents of the Football Federation of Georgia and the National Volleyball Federation of Georgia with a general proposal within the framework of a case related to alleged gender-based discrimination.

As a result of the case study, it was revealed that due to the lack of funding for women's clubs, the income of women involved in sports is much lower than the income of men. In addition, the funding for treatment of injuries sustained by female professionals during trainings/games is poorly regulated, further exacerbating the unequal starting position of women involved in sports.

The Public Defender emphasized the general challenges related to women's sports, the importance of considering issues related to health and labour rights of women involved in sports from the perspective of equality, and the corresponding obligations of the sports federations.

As a result, the Public Defender called on the Presidents of the Football Federation of Georgia and the National Volleyball Federation of Georgia to examine the situation of covering the expenses of treatment of injuries by women's clubs, with the active involvement of all stakeholders, as well as to consider the introduction of an effective mechanism for treatment financing and to increase efforts to find financial resources for the protection of the health of women involved in sports.
