18th Meeting of the Consultative Council of Monitoring the Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On 13 June 2019, the Consultative Council for Promoting, Protecting and Monitoring the Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities held its 18th meeting, which was led by Deputy Public Defender Ekaterine Skhiladze.

The Deputy Public Defender informed the Council members of the completion of development of an action plan and strategy of national mechanism of monitoring the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Irine Oboladze, Head of the Department of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, presented information on the implemented and planned measures of the monitoring mechanism; Lika Batsikadze, an employee of the Department, introduced the main findings of the monitoring of inclusive education carried out in pilot public schools.

Members of the Council discussed the issues related to the rights situation of persons with disabilities, including: deficiencies related to the provision of social packages to persons with moderate disabilities (including persons with hearing impairment), the problem of provision of assistive devices to persons with multiple disabilities (vision and hearing impairments), the prioritization document developed for the purpose of monitoring the implementation the school education of blind children within the framework of monitoring the implementation of the Convention on Persons with Disabilities, etc.

The next meeting of the consultative body will be held within 3 months.
