UN Independent Expert on Enjoyment of All Human Rights by Older Persons Visits Public Defender’s Office

On March 20, 2018,RosaKornfeld-Matte, UNIndependent Experton the enjoyment of all humanrightsbyolder persons,visited the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia. Ekaterine Skhiladze, Deputy Public Defender of Georgia and Rusudan Kokhodze, Deputy Head of the Department of Persons with Disabilities, discussed the rights situation of older persons in Georgia and the challenges related to aging. The discussion touched upon the important role and activities of the Public Defender in the field of protection of the rights ofolderpersons.

The aim of the expert’s visit to Georgia is to study the legislation, practice and policy on older persons in order to detect positive approaches and shortcomings. After the visit,RosaKornfeld-Matte will prepare a special report and submit it to the UN Human Rights Council.

Special rapporteur’s visits is an important instrument that enables the mandate holder to generally assess the human rights situation, specific institutional, legal or administrative situations or practices in a given country.

The Public Defender of Georgia sent a letter of invitation to the UNIndependent Experton the enjoyment of all humanrightsbyolder personsin February 2016, provided her with information about the key challenges in the protection of human rights of older persons and invited her to the country in order to study the circumstances of individual and systemic violations, to make legal assessment and to identify effective response mechanisms.
