Public Defender's Representatives Visit Detained Nino Datashvili

On June 27, July 11 and 16, 2025, Public Defender's representatives visited Nino Datashvili in Penitentiary Institution No. 5.

During the meeting, Nino Datashvili discussed various issues with the representatives, regarding which the Public Defender's Office has addressed the Prosecutor General's Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Medical Department of the Special Penitentiary Service.

It is noteworthy that on July 11, Nino Datashvili requested the Public Defender's representatives not to make the information provided about her public. Accordingly, the Office has not disclosed any special category personal information about Nino Datashvili's health status.

The Public Defender's Office continues to monitor the rights of the accused and will take all measures to protect her rights within the framework of the competence defined by legislation.

In addition to the above, the Public Defender would like to respond to the recent deliberately spread false information about the institution, alleging that the Office does not respond to the violations of the rights of persons deprived of their liberty in a timely manner.

Given the high public interest, we would like to clarify the following: the spread of misinformation about the Office's response on social networks or by individual media outlets causes particular harm to the process of protecting the rights of each prisoner.

The hotline of the Public Defender's Office operates 24 hours a day. Information received at any time from a closed-type institution, which concerns alleged facts of ill-treatment and health issues, is immediately responded to. The Public Defender's representatives conduct on-site visits and provide an initial response. In addition, further measures are later determined, including, if necessary, the involvement of a doctor employed by the Office.

The Public Defender, as the national mechanism for the prevention of torture, primarily acts in the best interests of the detainees and, at their request, protects personal information about them, including their health status. Despite the high public interest, information is made public only with the consent of the person deprived of liberty.

In addition, it should be noted that the Public Defender's representatives have never had the authority to conduct medical examinations in penitentiary institutions themselves.

The Public Defender actively continues to supervise the rights of prisoners, including their right to health.
