Public Defender Visits Penitentiary Establishment No. 1 in Laituri, Ozurgeti Municipality

On April 25, 2024, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani visited Penitentiary Establishment No. 1 in Laituri, Ozurgeti municipality, talked to prisoners, including those sentenced to life imprisonment, and the administration.

The Public Defender inspected the territory of the institution, cells, bathrooms, kitchen and medical unit, the condition of common spaces necessary for the rehabilitation of convicts and their accessibility for persons with disabilities, including rooms intended for receiving visitors.

There is a library on the territory of the Laituri penitentiary, an educational room equipped with digital equipment, where convicts have the opportunity to attend the educational process online and receive higher education.

While talking to the convicts, the Public Defender showed interest in the state of human rights protection and the effectiveness of the parole mechanism for prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Public Defender continues to monitor penitentiary and other closed institutions.
