Public Defender Meets Dismissed Employees of Chiatura Manganese Mine

On April 10, 2025, the Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, met with dismissed employees of the Chiatura Manganese Mine and listened to their problems.

The miners spoke about the issues of dismissal, working conditions, and compensation, and asked the Public Defender to mediate with representatives of the relevant agencies to resolve the problems.

The Public Defender spoke about the scale of the problem. According to him, in a city, where most of the population was employed in the manganese mine, the dismissal of miners and leaving them without a source of livelihood further aggravate the economic and social situation, which violates the human right to work and the right to a dignified life.

The meeting also highlighted the ecological situation of the Chiatura municipality, which is suffering irreparable damage as a result of open-pit mining.

The Public Defender promised the miners that he would spare no effort to bring their problems to the attention of decision-makers.

As is known, since the beginning of March, Chiatura Management Company, in agreement with Georgian Manganese, has stopped underground works in Chiatura.
