Georgian Public Defender Meets His Slovak Counterpart
On July 17-18, 2025, the Public Defender of Georgia hosted the Public Defender of the Slovak Republic, Robert Dobrovodsky, and his delegation.
During the meeting held within the framework of the visit, the Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, provided the guests with information about the structure, mandate and main activities of the Public Defender's Office. He spoke about the complaints administration system, institutional priorities and work directions, as well as international cooperation and donor support. He focused on recent legislative changes affecting the activities of non-governmental organizations and the monitoring of the implementation of the rights to peaceful assembly.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputies of the Public Defender, Tamar Gvaramadze, Elene Ghudushauri and Irine Chikhladze.
The parties signed a memorandum aimed at strengthening future cooperation between the two institutions.
During the visit, the Public Defender of the Slovak Republic and his representatives were introduced to the activities of the National Preventive Mechanism of Georgia, including the legal framework, institutional structure, methodology of preventive visits, reporting and follow-up mechanisms. They also discussed the role of the National Preventive Mechanism in protecting the rights of vulnerable groups in closed institutions and coordination between the structural units of the Office.
The guests showed interest in the recent developments of Georgia and the challenges facing the country in terms of human rights protection.
On July 18, it is planned to provide the delegation with information about the conditions in temporary detention centers and the state of protection of prisoners' rights.
