Ekaterine Skhiladze Appointed as Deputy Public Defender of Georgia

On July 21, 2016, Ekaterine Skhiladze,Head of the Department of Gender Equality of the Public Defender's Office, was appointed as Deputy Public Defender of Georgia.

Ekaterine Skhirtladze graduated from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, where she studied at the Department of Law. In 2008 she passed a university course in domestic violence issues intended for social workers.

Since 2007 she has been actively involved in the processes aimed at protecting women's rights and gender equality. In 2007-2012 she worked in the non-governmental organization Women's Information Center. Her duties included project management, administration of resource center, research and evidence-based advocacy of women’s needs.

Since 2009 she has been involved in the Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian public diplomacy and confidence-building projects that are being implemented by Georgian and international organizations.

In 2012-2013 she passed a practical course in the Active Women's Association in Poland, during which she held trainings on human rights and gender equality issues at schools and universities.

In 2013-2016 she worked as Head of the Department of Gender Equality at the Public Defender's Office of Georgia.

Since 2014 she has been involved in the activities of the coordination councils working on promotion of protection of human rights and gender equality. In particular, she is a member of the following agencies: the Consultative Council of the National Preventive Mechanism of the Public Defender's Office; the National Coordination Group on Women, Peace and Security; the Public Defender's Consultative Council for Monitoring the Promotion, Protection and Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the Interagency Council on the Prevention of Domestic Violence; the Group Granting Status of Victim of Domestic Violence.

According to the implemented changes, Natia Katsitadze, Deputy Public Defender of Georgia in 2015-2016, was appointed as First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia.
