Meeting of the Public Defender with the Chairperson of the Supreme Court

On May 20, 2015, Public Defender of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili met with Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia Nino Gvenetadze. At the meeting, they discussed shortcomings identified in relation with judicial authorities referred in parliamentary reports of the Public Defender, issued recommendations and legislative changes planned in the framework of reforms of the justice system.

The Public Defender acquainted the Chairperson of the Supreme Court with an initiative of increasing powers of the Constitutional Court. The initiative implies examination of constitutionality of individual legal acts and legally-enforced decisions of common courts. The Chairperson of the Supreme Court expressed her readiness to become actively involved in public discussions on the draft law.

The Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia presented her vision of strengthening of the ombudsman mandate to the Public Defender. In the words of Nino Gvenetadze, work is under way on a legislative change that implies mandatory examination of recommendations and proposals forwarded to the Council of Justice and launching of disciplinary proceedings against a judge in case of such necessity.

The Public Defender and the Chairperson of the Supreme Court agreed on active cooperation; joint discussions and meetings including close consultations in the area of reforming of the justice system were also planned.
