Meeting on Prohibition of Physical Abuse of Children

From November 28 through December 2, 2016, Maia Gedevanishvili, Head of the Public Defender’s Center for Child’s Rights, participated in a meeting on the prohibition of physical abuse of children, which was organized by the Swedish Institute and Save the Children in Stockholm.

Representatives of governmental and non-governmental agencies of the world's 7 counties, as well as the ombudsman institutions, discussed the legal aspects of corporal punishment of children and the enforcement of the law, as well as the issues relating to the creation of non-violent environment for children. The aim of the visit to Sweden was to meet the experts of this field, share experience and promote the creation of an international network.

The Public Defender's representative broadly spoke about the situation of child's physical punishment in Georgia both at the legislative and executive levels.

Participants of the event met with representatives of the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs and the Ombudsman for Children.

At present, corporal punishment of children is prohibited by law in 51 countries. It is welcome that Georgia has committed to the prohibition of corporal punishment of children.
