Public Defender Meest with Members of Council of Europe Delegation

On November 22, 2017, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili met with Kerstin LundgrenandTitusCorlăţean, members of the PACE Monitoring Committee, Bas Klein, representative of the Council of Europe, and Christian Urse, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, and briefed them of the situation of human rights in Georgia.

The challenges in the Georgian judiciary, alleged wrongdoings by law enforcers, ongoing constitutional reform, human rights situation in the occupied territories, quality of media freedom, criteria for selecting ombudsman and other important issues were discussed at the meeting.

The Public Defender also highlighted the recent public statements made about the ombudsman’s institution by the authorities, parliamentary majority and representatives of the judiciary. According to Ucha Nanuashvili, the statements were direct attacks on the ombudsman’s institution and attempts to discredit it.
