Public Defender Updates Diplomatic Missions of State of Human Rights at Ambassadorial

Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili has updated the diplomatic missions of the positive trends and challenges in the field of human rights at the meeting held within the framework of the ambassadorial on 3 September 2015.

The Public Defender focused on the situation and ongoing reforms in the penitentiary system, facts of improper treatment by law enforcers and investigation of the facts, legislative amendments and the efforts of the Public Defender’s Office for the eradication of all forms of discrimination. He also spoke about the necessity for creation of effective labor inspection and independent investigation mechanisms, challenges in the field of gender equality, dismissal of civil servants from the public sector and violation of human rights in the occupied regions. The Public Defender underlined the lack of government's unified strategy and approach for conflict resolution.

Ucha Nanuashvili also talked about the need for improvement of communication channels and exchange of information with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the diplomatic missions. He said that in some cases Georgia’s diplomatic missions abroad are not well informed of the state of human rights in Georgia.

The Public Defender expressed his readiness for close cooperation and development of regular communication format with the diplomatic missions abroad.
