Public Defender’s Statement on Alleged Beating of Clergyman by Police

The Public Defender is echoing the report released by news agencies, according to which, police officers brutally beat a clergyman in Lanchkhuti, Guria region of Georgia.

The Public Defender calls on the Prosecutor’s Office to immediately launch an investigation, ensure safety of the clergyman and prevent involvement of the police officers, suspected of committing the violence, in the investigation.

The state is obliged to pay particular attention to alleged abuse of power by police officers and ensure prompt and impartial investigation of each such case.

The Public Defender will study the released media report in detail and will respond to the incident relevantly.
