Public Lecture at Gori State Teaching University

On December 5, 2016, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili held a public lecture at the Gori State Teaching University within the framework of the Human Rights Week.

At the meeting with the students, the Public Defender reviewed the country's human rights situation, including gender equality and protection of the rights of children, persons with disabilities and homeless people. He also talked about the implementation of the law on elimination of all forms of discrimination and the needs of IDPs.

The Public Defender paid special attention to the human rights situation of people living in the conflict zone and the Georgian-Abkhazian dialogue, which according to him, is a good opportunity for exchanging information. He added that talks are underway with the Ossetian right defenders on the launch of a dialogue.

In addition, the Public Defender generally reviewed the challenges relating to the justice and prison systems and familiarized the students with the main recommendations developed for governmental agencies.

The Public Defender will hold another public lecture within the framework of the Human Rights Week at the Akhaltsikhe University on December 8.

International Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10. On December 10, 1948, the UN General Assembly declared theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights as “a common achievement for all peoples and all nations’.
