Public Lecture at Samtskhe-Javakheti State University

On December 8, 2016, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili delivered a public lecture at Samtskhe-Javakheti State University within the framework of the Human Rights Week.

The Public Defender reviewed the country's human rights situation, including gender equality and protection of the rights of children, persons with disabilities and homeless people. He also talked about the implementation of the law on the elimination of all forms of discrimination, the needs of IDPs and the human rights situation of the people living in the conflict zone. He emphasized the importance of high-quality freedom of the media.

The Public Defender also talked about the need for creation of an independent investigation mechanism, generally reviewed the challenges relating to the justice and prison systems and familiarized the students with the main recommendations developed for the governmental agencies.

The Public Defender also briefed the students of the Public Defender’s mandate in the field of civic education and the activities of the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender.

International Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10. The UN General Assembly declared theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights as “a common achievement for all peoples and all nations’ on December 10, 1948.
