Cooperation with Representatives of International Criminal Court

On 25 October 2018, Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Burjanadze delivered a speech at the High Level Regional Conference of the International Criminal Court and talked about the safety along the occupation line and the rights situation of conflict-affected persons. He underlined the fact that the persons internally displaced as a result of the 2008 war and the population affected by that conflict often become victims of arbitrary detentions by the occupation forces. According to him, no international observation or development organization has the opportunity to work in the Tskhinvali region, which remains one of the main challenges.

In addition, on 26 October 2018, at the Public Defender's Office, the delegation from the International Criminal Court met with representatives of the NGOs defending the rights of victims affected by the 2008 war in the international courts. The process of investigation, safety of witnesses and social programs for conflict-affected persons were discussed at the meeting attended by Tamar Gvaramadze and Giorgi Burjanadze, Deputies of the Public Defender, PeterLewis, Registrarof theInternational Criminal Court, Alma TasoDeljković, member of the Board of Directors of the Trust FundforVictims, representatives of the Georgia Office of the Court and the Office of the Prosecutor.

The Office of the Prosecutor of the Hague Court has been investigating the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the August 2008 since 27 January 2016. The investigation includes cases of ethnic cleansing of Georgians, destruction of property, attack on civilians, attack on peacekeeping forces, torture and murder of Georgian captives. The Public Defender of Georgia welcomes the investigation of the crimes committed during and after the 2008 war by the International Criminal Court and believes that the investigation will help establish the truth, restore victims' rights and speed up the peace processes between the parties to the conflict and the affected population.
