Public Defender Echoes Information Broadcast by TV Pirveli regarding Situation in Penitentiary Establishment No. 2

On March 24, 2024, TV Pirveli reported that one of the prisoners in Penitentiary Establishment No. 2 had gone on a hunger strike in connection with the bad conditions and treatment in the facility.

Representatives of the Public Defender meet dozens of prisoners in different penitentiary facilities every week, among them, visits are constantly made to Penitentiary Establishment No. 2. They meet with all prisoners whose rights were allegedly violated.

The last visit to Establishment No. 2 took place on March 20. Public Defender’s representatives visited a number of prisoners based on their applications. The next visit will be made tomorrow to identify and talk to the prisoner mentioned in the TV story.

The Public Defender’s Office actively works on systemic problems in Penitentiary Establishment No. 2 and implements appropriate legal responses to the violations of the rights of specific prisoners.

The Office will continue to monitor the situation in penitentiary institutions in the future.
