Public Defender Meets with UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia

On 16 April 2019, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria and Deputy Public Defender Ekaterine Skhiladze met with Afshan Khan,UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia and Special Coordinator for Refugee and Migrant Crisis in Europe.

Nino Lomjaria spoke about the activities of the Public Defender of Georgia in the direction of ​​child's rights, focusing on the high rate of child poverty, problems of protection from violence and shortcomings in the provision of appropriate services. She noted that the lack of social workers and their working conditions represent serious challenges in the country. She also spoke about the importance of inclusion of children with disabilities in the formal education process, infrastructural situation of general and preschool institutions and other issues.

The Public Defender expressed her readiness to continue activities aimed at promoting the protection, promotion and realization of child's rights in cooperation with the UNICEF and all other stakeholders.
