Public Defender Echoes Acquittal of Giorgi Akhobadze

The Public Defender welcomes the acquittal of Giorgi Akhobadze by the Tbilisi City Court on August 6, 2025.

On March 24, 2025, the Public Defender submitted an amicus curiae brief to the court in the mentioned case, emphasizing the importance of neutral evidence.

The amicus curiae brief discussed constitutional and international human rights standards, according to which the creation and acquisition of neutral evidence during a body search is essential for holding a person accountable.

In cases where police officers have the opportunity to obtain neutral evidence, including video recordings, and do not do so, and the charges are essentially based only on the police officers' testimonies, this cannot be considered a practice consistent with human rights.

The Public Defender hopes that the acquittal of Giorgi Ahobadze will have a positive impact on establishing the obligation of the police to obtain neutral evidence and on developing sound judicial practice.
