Public Defender Meets with Residents of Gugutiantkari

On August 7, 2023, on the 15th anniversary of the August War, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani visited the village of Gugutiantkari, located near the dividing line, met the local population and listened to their problems.

"15 years ago, the Russian Federation invaded our country and made more than 27 thousand of our citizens IDPs. 15 years later, people living along the dividing line still have to deal with the occupation, their yards and orchards are divided by creeping annexation, and our citizens are still being illegally kidnapped and detained.

There are many burned houses in Gugutiantkari, the owners of which received compensation in 2008. In my opinion, the compensation given in 2008 is not a sufficient excuse for the fact that today there are so many uninhabitable houses and that their inhabitants are living in the former public school building.

The State should pay more attention to these people who, despite the difficulties, stay and continue to live here. It may not be possible to rebuild their homes, and they may not feel safe in the divided houses and yards, but the State must make every effort to create decent living conditions for them. These people are constantly under great danger and still do not leave their village, their homes, this place - this is equivalent to heroism," the Public Defender said after a meeting with the locals.
