Public Defender Holds Meetings in Guria

On 30 May 2019, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria and Deputy Public Defender Ekaterine Skhiladze met with locals in the village of Likhauri, Ozurgeti municipality, and talked about the problems related to the extraction of inert materials in the region. According to the Public Defender, it is not clear how the mentioned affects the environment, especially given that license requirements are not properly controlled. According to the population, the extraction of inert materials led to the problem of drinking water. The scale of labour migration was emphasized at the meeting as well.

The population also expressed concern about the Asian bugs that destroyed nuts and fruit in the region. According to the locals, the medication distributed by the government is ineffective.

The negative effect of quarryingwas discussed at the meeting with representatives of non-governmental organizations and students as well. Nino Lomjaria answered students’ questions about the mandate and priorities of the Public Defender.

Issues of domestic violence and women's rights were also discussed at the meeting. Special attention was paid to the rights and social status of persons with disabilities. The Public Defender noted she would make every effort to ensure that the state and local authorities support programmes intended for persons with disabilities.
