Public Defender Meets with Wrestler Zurab Datunashvili

On 6 February 2019, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria met with the captain of Greko-Roman wrestling squad, Zurab Datunashvili, and personally received information about the pressure exerted on him in the Georgian Wrestling Federation.

"This young athlete is confronting the whole system alone today and I want to express my support to him. I also offer my support to all the athletes who may be enduring unjust and selective treatment. At the same time, Zura faces a danger of becoming a victim of unfair treatment by the management due to his brave and, I think, correct statements.

Wrestling is the most important sport for our country. Georgian wrestlers have been a reason for a lots of joy and happiness of our citizens and they need support from the state and the society in order to prevent that they become victims of unfair treatment and end their career due to certain informal influences," Nino Lomjaria said.

The Public Defender addresses the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport to pay particular attention to the unhealthy situation in the Wrestling Federation and ensure that Zurab Datunashvili is able to continue his career without any obstacle.

The Public Defender also calls on the agencies responsible for managing the public finances to study the transparency of the management of finances and the relevance of costs in the Wrestling Federation.

At the end of the meeting, Zurab Datunashvili thanked the Public Defender for her full support.
