Public Defender's Statement on Closure of Enguri Bridge and Saberio-Pakhulani Crossing Point

The Public Defender is echoing the closure of the Enguri Bridge and Saberio-Pakhulani crossing point. It is worth noting that the artificial restrictions on movement imposed by the de facto authorities mostly coincide with holidays.

The frequent and unpredictable closure of the so-called checkpoints, which are the only way of connection with the Tbilisi-controlled territory, limit the freedom of movement of the residents of occupied Abkhazia and create unjustified obstacles for them to earn livelihood.

It is important to note that the Enguri bridge and the Saberio-Pakhulani “checkpoint” are not only crossing points for the residents of occupied Gali; For Georgians living in occupied Abkhazia, they have a vital importance as a means to access education, better-quality medical services, cheaper products, pensions, family members and relatives.

The closure of the so-called checkpoints has a particularly negative impact on older population, who are left alone in the occupied territory and are unable to visit their family members.

Considering all of the above, the Public Defender calls on the authorities - with the help of international community - to conduct negotiations so that the occupation regime protects the freedom of movement of the population, namely by removing illegal restrictions on the entire perimeter of the administrative boundary line and ensuring smooth functioning of the so-called checkpoints.
