Deputy Public Defender Delivers Report at EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee

On 27 March 2019, Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Burjanadze delivered a speech at the 8th session of the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee and spoke about the protection of human rights and parliamentary supervision over it, the rule of law and democratic reforms in Georgia. The conversation touched upon the Public Defender's dialogue with various agencies and relevant cooperation formats.

The Deputy Public Defender focused on two issues:

1. Activation of the State Inspector’s Office - As of 28 March 2018, no financial resources have been allocated for the service, which is due to open in 3 months. It is necessary to take immediate steps in this direction;

2. The challenges faced by the common courts of Georgia – in this direction, he underlined the rule of election of Supreme Court judges and the deficiencies in the draft law adopted in the first reading. The Public Defender’s Office has remarks with regard to the criteria for the selection of judges, conflict of interest, secrecy of voting, rule of decision-making of the High Council of Justice and transparency of parliamentary discussions. The Deputy Public Defender said that the Office would use all opportunities available to improve the situation in this direction.
