Statement of the Council of Religions under the Public Defender of Georgia on the visit of the United States Secretary of State, the honorable Michael R. Pompeo

We, the Council of Religions, welcome the visit of the United States Secretary of State, the honorable Michael R. Pompeo to Georgia. It is of utmost importance for us, that one of the reasons of Secretary Pompeo’s visit to Georgia is to support freedom of religion.

We take this opportunity to express our gratitude towards the American people and the government of the United States of America, for their great efforts throughout the years in promoting the independence, territorial integrity, protection of human rights, prosperity and democratic development of our country as well as safeguarding freedom of religion and tolerance throughout the world, including in Georgia.

The Council of Religions under the Public Defender of Georgia, which was founded in 2005 and represents 32 religious associations, has been upholding the values of religious freedom and tolerant relations. In the process of our work, we continue to feel the support of the United States.

Through joint efforts, we have achieved multiple successes, and positive changes, however, challenges and insurmountable problems still remain, particularly with regard to the systemic discrimination and an aggressive, intolerant environment towards non-dominant religious groups.

We are confident, that the United States of America will continue its strong support towards Georgia in future as well, and will spare no effort to develop a culture of religious freedom and tolerance in our country.
