Working Meeting on Systemic Challenges and Institutional Aspects of Mental Health Care

On July 10-11, 2025, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani held a working meeting with representatives of psychiatric institutions on the topic of systemic challenges and institutional aspects of the state of mental health care in Georgia.

The current situation of mental health care, including the overcrowding of inpatient psychiatric services and issues of improving the current situation in terms of the provision of community outpatient mental health services, as well as the need to introduce a human rights-based approach in psychiatry in order to improve the rights of persons with mental health problems, were discussed at the meeting.

Representatives of the Public Defender's Office presented a thematic report on the state of mental health care in the criminal justice system, prepared together with an international expert, within the framework of the National Preventive Mechanism, and discussed the main findings and the recommendations developed.

The participants in the workshop exchanged the latest information and discussed practical ways to solve existing problems in mental health services.
