Statement on International Day of Peace

September 21 is the International Day of Peace and it is devoted to strengthening and dissemination of the idea of peace between the nations. The Public Defender and his Office joins the International Day of Peace, which was first celebrated in 1982, while in 2001 the United Nations General Assembly declared 21 September as the day of ceasefire and non-violence.

The Day’s theme for 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”, which is aimed at emphasizing the importance of sustainable development in establishing peace. The sustainable development integrates constant aspirations of states to social and gender equality, available and quality education, reduction of poverty and protection of environment.

The modern world faces challenges, such as poverty, scarce natural resources, inequality, corruption, racism and xenophobia. All this is the best ground for confrontation between people and endangers peace. This year the International Day of Peace is devoted to the fight against these causes of conflicts.

One of the priorities of the Public Defender's activities is the protection of the rights of conflict-affected population, which is the best way for conflict prevention and peace-keeping.

To mark the occasion, the Public Defender will host a conference in the city of Zugdidi, which will be devoted to the rights of people living along the dividing line. The Public Defender will call on the central and local authorities to use full efforts to protect the rights of conflict-affected population that would be a prerequisite for maintaining peace in the country.
