Training for Representatives of Organizations Working on Issues on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
On 23-27 May, 2016, the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender held training for representatives of organizations working on the issues on the rights of persons with disabilities. The topic of the training was: “Implementation and Monitoring of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities".
The training was conducted by Damjan Tatic, international expert and member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Irine Oboladze and Rusudan Kokhodze, representatives of the Public Defender's Office.
Persons with disabilities, their parents, representatives of the organizations working on the issues concerning persons with disabilities - a total of 18 people - participated in the training.
The training course included both theoretical and practical teaching methods. The following issues were discussed during the training: rights of persons with disabilities, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, practices of other countries with regard to the promotion of the Convention, denial of reasonable accommodation and discrimination, monitoring of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, national focal points responsible for the implementation of the Convention, the best ways for the monitoring of implementation, promotion and protection of the Convention.
In addition to theoretical materials, the training focused on open discussions, group exercises and presentations. Within the mentioned activities, participants were actively involved in the discussion of a variety of topics.
After the training, the participants were awarded certificates.
The training was held within the project “Support to the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender” that is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A few more trainings are planned within the project for various focus groups, which serve to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of human rights.
