On November 10-13, 2016, the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender held training with the financial support of the UN Women. The theme of the training was: Coverage of Gender Issues and Journalistic Ethics. Various aspects of gender equality and women's rights were discussed during the training. The event was attended by 15 representatives of central and regional media organizations.

During the four-day training, participants had the opportunity to learn about: principles of gender equality, gender roles, stereotypes and attitudes in the society, Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, correct formulation of the violation of human/women’s rights and possible solution to this problem, respondents’ confidentiality and ethics of journalism, coverage of gender-based violence, institutional mechanisms of the protection of women’s rights.

The course included methods of both theoretical and practical teachings. In addition to listening to theoretical materials, the participants had the opportunity to take part in the open discussions, group exercises, presentations and film screenings. They discussed various topics, listened to arguments and developed their own reasoning.

The training was led by international expert Hannah Storm, Georgian expert Zviad Koridze and a representative of the Public Defender's Office, Ani Lobjanidze.

It should be noted that the media has a very important role in the process of elimination of gender inequality and discrimination and therefore, it is important that journalists be provided with full information about gender equality and women's rights, in order to ensure that they, as well as the public, are correctly informed. Consequently, the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender will continue to retrain journalists in the mentioned direction.
