Congratulations on the International Women's Day! I wish the celebration of this day in Georgia to be related to the understanding of the history of women's movement and the results achieved. In addition, it is important to draw attention to the problems that negatively affect the women's rights.

Despite the steps taken by the government, civil society and international organizations to overcome gender inequality in Georgia over the last few years, there still remain problems that require immediate interference and response by the state. The situation of violence against women and domestic violence is difficult, while in terms of realization of the equality rights, women are one of the most vulnerable groups.

In the process of achieving gender equality, it is necessary to encourage women's political and economic participation, as this is directly related to the indicator of country's democratic development. In addition, the state should realize how its policy affects women of different ethnic origins, gender identity and social affiliation, and should take all measures to address their different needs.

The Public Defender expresses solidarity with the various types of events and demonstrations due to be held to mark the International Women's Day and emphasizes that the initiatives aimed at improving the rights situation of women and transgender women includes voicing the intersectional and needs-based problems.

The Public Defender once again congratulates all women on March 8 and calls on the public and state agencies to make more efforts to achieve gender equality in the country.
