Strengthening Women's Participation in Civil Integration Process

On March 2, 2023, acting Public Defender of Georgia Tamar Gvaramadze participated in a workshop organized by the Office of the State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, the theme of which was the strengthening of women's participation in the civil integration process.

In her speech, Tamar Gvaramadze spoke about the problems relating to the equal participation of women. According to her, Georgia developed national legislative and policy documents, as well as institutional mechanisms, but effective involvement of women in any area of life is impossible without the active work of local authorities. Therefore, one of the main focus of the state policy in the direction of gender equality and gender mainstreaming should be measures aimed at supporting and strengthening municipalities.

“At the information meetings held by the Public Defender's Office, women indicated their dramatically low involvement in the decision-making processes in the municipalities, including during budget planning, which is due to the lack of awareness, low confidence in the process, home labour, difficulty of movement, stereotypical and discriminatory approaches.

Women with disabilities, older women and displaced women face even bigger challenges. The quality of integration of women of ethnic minorities and communication with them is also low, caused by the language barrier and limited access to information,” – said the acting Public Defender.
