Public Defender's Office Holds Information Meeting for Refugees on Violence against Women and Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On December 12, 2025, the Public Defender's Office, with the support and involvement of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Georgia, held an information meeting with asylum seekers and refugees on issues of violence against women and rights of persons with disabilities.

In their welcoming speeches at the opening of the event, the Deputy Public Defender and representatives of the United Nations Population Fund emphasized the importance of disseminating information on these topics.

Representatives of the Department of Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the Public Defender's Office and UNHCR discussed the basic standards of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the rights guaranteed to persons with disabilities seeking asylum under the UN Convention and domestic legal acts. They also introduced the participants of the meeting to the challenges identified by the Public Defender over the years and the recommendations developed by the Office to eliminate them.

A representative of the Gender Department of the Public Defender's Office spoke about the forms of violence against women and domestic violence, the importance of violence prevention, and the protection and assistance mechanisms available in the state.
