Public Defender’s Statement on Marneuli Developments

The Public Defender’s Office is closely watching the events ongoing in Marneuli. At this moment, representatives of the office are travelling to Marneuli to better monitor the situation on the ground.

As far as we are informed at this stage, several people were physically assaulted, including Giorgi Mumladze, a representative of the monitoring organization, and representatives of the media (Mtavari TV, Public Broadcaster).

As a result of our communication with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, we have been informed that an investigation was launched into alleged obstruction of journalistic activities and violence.

We hope that the investigation will be carried out effectively and all the offenders will be identified quickly. This will be an important precondition for ensuring public order and peaceful elections.
